Martha Stewart Bananas Foster Milkshake

Martha Stewart bananas foster milkshake is a thick, creamy dessert drink with vanilla and coffee ice cream, bruleed banana and caramel that comes together in 15 minutes. Save this easy dessert idea for date night, summer evenings or birthday treats, because it's a quick, simple recipe with no baking.

Blend the vanilla ice cream and milk only until it is thick but still pourable. Go past that and it turns into a thin drink that can't hold up the whipped cream and toppings.

Martha takes the flavors of the classic bananas dessert and turns them into a sweet-and-salty milkshake with a caramel-dipped rim and pretzels in the glass. Torching the sugared banana slices gives that bruleed crust you would usually get from a pan of flaming bananas.

Vanilla ice cream, milk and banana blend into a thick shake that gets layered over a scoop of coffee ice cream in a caramel-streaked glass. Whipped cream, a torched banana and salty pretzels finish it off.

Ingredients

  • Caramel Sauce for Skillet-Baked Chocolate Chip Cookie

  • 1 1/2 cups vanilla ice cream

  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup whole milk

  • 1 small banana, sliced lengthwise

  • Sugar, for sprinkling

  • 1 scoop coffee ice cream

  • 4 pretzels

  • Lightly sweetened whipped cream

Directions

  • Rim the glass: Dip the rim of a tall glass in caramel sauce. Then set the glass in the freezer while you make the milkshake.
  • Blend the milkshake: Blend 1 1/2 cups vanilla ice cream with 1/3 to 1/2 cup whole milk until thick but pourable. Add half of the sliced banana and pulse just to combine.
  • Caramelize the bananas: Sprinkle the remaining banana slices with sugar. Then use a hand-held kitchen torch to caramelize them until the tops turn dark and crisp.
  • Build the glass: Spread some caramel sauce on the inside of the chilled glass, then add 1 scoop of coffee ice cream. Drizzle on more caramel and break 2 pretzels into the glass.
  • Add the milkshake: Pour the milkshake over the coffee ice cream, stopping short of the top. Leave room, because the toppings will make it overflow if the glass is too full.
  • Top and serve: Pipe lightly sweetened whipped cream on top, then add the bruleed banana, more caramel sauce and the 2 remaining pretzels dipped in caramel. Serve with a straw, a bowl and a spoon.

FAQs

Can I make this banana milkshake without a kitchen torch?

Yes, you can caramelize the sugared banana slices under a hot broiler for 1 to 2 minutes instead. Watch them closely, since sugar goes from golden to burnt very fast.

How do I keep the milkshake from getting too thin?

Start with the lower amount of milk, 1/3 cup, and add more only if the blender struggles. Blending just until it is thick but pourable keeps it sturdy enough for the toppings.

Can I make the caramel sauce ahead of time?

Yes, caramel sauce keeps in a covered jar in the fridge for about 2 weeks. Warm it for 10 to 15 seconds in the microwave so it drizzles and spreads easily.

What can I use instead of coffee ice cream?

Another scoop of vanilla works fine, or try dulce de leche or butter pecan for a deeper caramel flavor. Coffee ice cream adds a mild bitterness that balances the sweet caramel.

Can I make this milkshake ahead of time?

Milkshakes are best made right before serving, since they melt and separate quickly. You can rim the glass, caramelize the bananas and have the caramel ready, then blend and assemble in about 2 minutes.
